For the first time in almost seven years, the UMR football team has won a game against another team in its conference. We beat Central Missouri State University 42-38 to snap the 58-game skid and secure the first win since 1997.

And people wonder why I don’t get into college football much…

Last night we went to a play. Yes, an actual live, onstage performance. I can’t even say when the last time I saw a play was– it’s been that long. This particular one was called “The Creature Creeps” and it was directed by my buddy Myles. In addition to the support-a-friend motivation, Laralee and I had an urge to just go out and do something different. There are only so many variations on the “let’s order a pizza and rent a DVD” date theme.

After a failed attempt to get a babysitter for the kids, we decided to just bring them along and see what happened. It turns out they loved it. Zack busted a gut at one of the characters, and Alex and Kyra caught some of the tongue-in-cheek puns that littered the dialogue. The whole thing was, to use Myles’ term for it, “campy”. But it was all around fun, and a great way to spend an evening without ordering a pizza and renting a DVD.

Three cheers for the North Stage Players!

It’s a presidential debate!
No, it’s an election!
Wrong again, it’s the CNN “Presidential Showdown Game”!

Whee. How awesome that the electoral process has now officially been reduced to a game.

I just got back from a trip to San Francisco, and as I was walking to my flight in the SFO concourse I noticed one of the internet kiosk phones was displaying a nice BIOS screen, asking for the password before continuing to boot.

But a few minutes later, I noticed another phone with the fabled Blue Screen of Death. Wow, I guess that’ll teach you not to run Windows on your kiosk phone! (Or, at a minimum, reboot the thing nightly…)

I’ve never been a fan of the Pervasive database product. I have to use it for one of my clients, and it’s always been nightmarish to integrate against, and the tools bundled with the software are hideous. Without going into boring technical details, let’s just say it sucks as a database package.

Just now I went to the company’s web site to see if I could track down a service pack they released, and I typed

No web site is configured at this address.

Hmm. Maybe they finally died a quiet death and went out of business? On a whim I tried [link:www.pervasive.com instead. Sure enough, their site came up just fine.

What kind of loser webmaster doesn’t take care of the case where you don’t type the “www” in front of the domain name? This is just plain lazy, and in my opinion it’s bad for business. It makes you look technically incompetent.

Anyway, now to find that dang service pack…
